Rural Wildfires Devastate American West in 2026
The American West is experiencing one of its most severe fire seasons in recent history, with approximately 7.2 million acres burned so far this year, nearly double the area burned by this time last year, according to the National Interagency Coordination Center. Fires have been particularly devastating in rural areas, including Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. The Big Grass Fire near Jordan Valley, Oregon, has been burning since July 23 and is among the largest in the state’s history, crossing into Idaho and contributing to the worst air quality in the nation. Extreme heat, drought, and dry fuel from an unusually warm winter have exacerbated the situation, destroying grazing lands, crops, and livestock. Volunteer firefighting groups, such as the Jordan Valley Rangeland Fire Protection Association, have been critical in combating the fires, often working in grueling conditions with limited resources.
