Tiger Shark Movements Reveal Transatlantic Connections, Highlighting Conservation Challenges
Researchers have tracked tiger sharks, revealing extensive movements across ocean basins, including a documented round-trip trans-Atlantic journey by one female shark covering nearly 11,185 miles (18,000 kilometers). This marks the second-longest movement ever recorded for a tiger shark and the first documented round-trip trans-Atlantic journey for the species. The study, conducted off the coast of Cabo Verde, aimed to understand tiger shark habitat use and survival. While some individuals remained in Cabo Verdean waters, others, like the trans-Atlantic traveler, ventured far, potentially driven by feeding opportunities, mating behavior, or shifts in prey availability. This individual variation in behavior, even within the same species, is increasingly recognized as a key factor in how animals interact with their environment. The findings complicate the understanding of large shark populations and their conservation needs.
