These chemicals are found in various food packaging materials, including plastic wraps, can coatings, and takeaway containers, and can migrate into food. Researchers from the Food Packaging Forum systematically compared known food-contact chemicals with publicly available hazard information to identify those with recognized risks such as carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, persistence, bioaccumulation, or organ toxicity. The study categorized these chemicals into four tiers based on the strength of evidence for human exposure through food-contact materials. The highest-priority group includes 94 chemicals that have been shown to migrate from food-contact materials and have also been detected in human samples through biomonitoring.
