Canada's Ambitious Plan to Quadruple Military Reserves Raises Concerns
Canada is undertaking a significant expansion of its military reserves, aiming to recruit 400,000 volunteer soldiers. This initiative, outlined in a directive from the Canada Department of Defence, seeks to more than quadruple the size of the current military force. The plan involves lowering entry standards for age, physical, and fitness requirements, and providing recruits with a one-week training on basic military skills. The government is encouraging public servants to volunteer, although this has been met with skepticism. The current primary reserve of 23,561 part-time members is expected to increase to 100,000, while the supplementary reserve will expand to 300,000. This move is partly motivated by the need for natural disaster response and potential high-intensity combat operations.
