Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations, Major Airlines Step In with Discounted Fares
Spirit Airlines has abruptly shut down, leaving many passengers without flights. In response, major airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines are offering discounted 'rescue fares' to assist stranded travelers. These offers are available for a limited time, with specific conditions such as in-person bookings at airport counters for Southwest until May 6, and online bookings for United for up to two weeks. Spirit Airlines has announced plans for an orderly wind-down and will process refunds for flights booked with credit or debit cards. The Department of Transportation advises passengers to contact their credit card companies for chargebacks and to check if travel insurance covers insolvency.
