Iran Denies Withdrawal from 2026 Venice Biennale Amidst Political and Economic Challenges
Iran's culture ministry has refuted claims that the country has withdrawn from the 2026 Venice Biennale. Despite a statement from the Biennale suggesting Iran's non-participation, Aydin Mahdizadeh Tehrani, the director-general of visual arts at Iran's ministry of culture, clarified that Iran intends to participate, albeit not for the full duration. The Biennale's announcement was attributed to internal procedures and the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has complicated Iran's ability to confirm participation. Economic challenges, including currency devaluation, have also impacted Iran's plans, leading to a proposal for a shorter participation period, which was rejected by the Biennale organizers. Iran is awaiting a final response from the Biennale and aims to secure a presence over the summer.
