QinetiQ Unveils Helena Laser Source Units for Broader Defense Applications
QinetiQ has introduced its Helena laser source units as a standalone product line at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026. These units, which are a variant of the DragonFire laser directed energy weapon (LDEW), are designed for various defense applications. The Helena units can be used in counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) roles and short-range air defense (SHORAD) for ground vehicles, with power outputs ranging from 30 kW to over 150 kW. The technology was initially delivered in 2019 by the DragonFire consortium, which includes QinetiQ, MBDA, and Leonardo, to the UK's Royal Navy. Two DragonFire units are set to be integrated onto RN Type 45 destroyers, with the first installation scheduled for 2027. QinetiQ has also announced a self-funded investment of GBP20 million to enhance the development and production of the Helena family, aiming to offer these units as merchant supplies for integration into other LDEW systems.
