South Carolina Faces Traffic and Housing Challenges Amid Population Growth
South Carolina is experiencing significant traffic congestion and housing issues due to rapid population growth and sprawling development patterns. The state's infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the demands of new residents, particularly in areas like Mount Pleasant. Historically, Mount Pleasant had minimal traffic, but recent years have seen increased congestion due to limited road networks and a ban on new multifamily housing. This policy, implemented in 2017, aimed to reduce traffic but may have exacerbated the problem by pushing workers to live further from their jobs. The current development pattern, characterized by large, expensive homes on the outskirts of metropolitan areas, is contributing to longer commutes and increased traffic. The grassroots organization Strong Towns highlights that such development generates insufficient tax revenue to maintain infrastructure, leading to a 'growth Ponzi scheme' where new development finances old infrastructure.
