LAUSD Reaches Tentative Labor Deal with Teachers Amid Potential School Closures
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has reached a tentative labor agreement with United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), which represents 35,000 teachers and counselors. The deal includes an 11.65% salary increase, a new-teacher salary of $77,000 per year, four weeks of district-paid parental leave, and expanded student mental health supports. Despite this agreement, schools may still face closures as negotiations continue with SEIU Local 99, the union representing bus drivers, classroom aides, and other staff. The union has declared an impasse, seeking a 30% wage increase over three years, while LAUSD has offered a 13% increase. If a strike occurs, it could disrupt the education of approximately 400,000 students and impact families needing childcare.
