Invasive Emerald Ash Borer Confirmed in Vancouver, Washington, Threatening Ash Tree Populations
The emerald ash borer, a highly destructive invasive pest, has been confirmed in Vancouver, Washington. This marks the first official detection of the beetle in Washington state. State officials, including Sven Spichiger, pest program manager at the Washington State Department of Agriculture, confirmed its presence after two individuals spotted the insect on their windshield in early August, collected it, and submitted it for identification. The metallic green beetle feeds on wood and has been responsible for the destruction of over 100 million ash trees across the United States since its initial detection two decades ago. All true ash species are vulnerable to infestation. The beetle has been active on the West Coast since 2022, when it was detected in Forest Grove, Oregon, and subsequently in Vancouver, British Columbia, a year later.
