Global Life Expectancy Nears Pre-Pandemic Levels, WHO Reports
Global life expectancy has rebounded to 73.3 years in 2023, closely approaching the 73.4 years recorded in 2019, according to the latest Global Health Estimates from the UN health agency. Dr. Alain Labrique, Director of WHO’s Department of Data, Digital Health, Analytics and AI, highlighted this as a significant public health achievement. The estimates, which track death and disability trends worldwide from 2000 to 2023, draw on various data sources including national vital registration and WHO technical programs. However, healthy life expectancy, defined as years lived in good health, has recovered more slowly, reaching 62.8 years in 2023, still 0.4 years below its 2019 level. The report also notes a long-term shift in causes of death, with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) accounting for 74% of deaths globally in 2023, up from 58% in 2000. For the first time in low-income countries, communicable diseases represented less than half of all deaths in 2023.
