Tornado Activity Surges in New Jersey Amid Severe Weather
New Jersey is experiencing an unprecedented increase in tornado activity, with four tornadoes already recorded this year, compared to an annual average of 2.5 since 1950 (Gothamist, 2026). Monmouth County alone has been under four tornado watches in 2026, three of which occurred in July. Severe weather, including heavy rain, flash flooding, and thunderstorms, has also impacted New York and New Jersey, leading to transit delays and emergency warnings. Experts attribute the rise in tornadoes to climate change, which is increasing atmospheric moisture and surface temperatures, creating conditions conducive to severe storms.
