Zimbabwe Joins BRICS New Development Bank, Shifting Economic Landscape
Zimbabwe has officially joined the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), marking a significant shift in Southern Africa's geopolitical and economic landscape. The announcement was made by Zimbabwe's Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube, at the Zimbabwe Industrialisation Conference and Expo 2026. This move represents a departure from the traditional international financial framework that has constrained Zimbabwe's economic growth for decades. The NDB, established by BRICS members, operates on principles of sovereign equality, non-interference, and South-South cooperation, offering Zimbabwe access to long-term financing for infrastructure and development projects. This membership allows Zimbabwe to reduce its reliance on high-cost, short-term commercial debt and manage legacy debt more effectively.
