Federal Judge Orders Release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from Immigration Detention Amid Legal Battle
A federal judge in Maryland has ordered the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from immigration detention, marking a significant development in his ongoing legal battle against deportation. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, was previously deported to El Salvador, where he faced threats from a gang targeting his family. His case has become emblematic of the Trump administration's immigration policies. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ruled that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had no legal basis to detain him upon his return to the United States. The Department of Homeland Security has criticized the decision, labeling it as 'naked judicial activism' and plans to appeal. Abrego Garcia's attorney, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, expressed readiness to continue defending his client against further deportation efforts. The case has drawn attention due to allegations of the government misleading the court and attempting to deport Abrego Garcia to various African countries without proper agreements.
