Astronomers Detect Atmosphere on Rocky Exoplanet LHS 1140b, Raising Hopes for Extraterrestrial Life
Scientists have identified signs of an atmosphere on LHS 1140b, a rocky exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf star 49 light-years from Earth. This discovery, led by planetary scientist Collin Cherubim, marks the first time an atmosphere has been detected on a rocky planet in the habitable zone of another star. LHS 1140b, a 'super-Earth' with a mass five times that of Earth, resides in the 'Goldilocks zone,' where conditions may allow for liquid water. The planet's atmosphere, primarily composed of helium, was detected using the Magellan Clay telescope in Chile. This finding is significant as it suggests that rocky planets around red dwarfs can retain atmospheres, despite the stars' intense radiation, which typically strips atmospheres away. Further observations are planned to confirm the presence of other gases, such as oxygen, which could indicate potential habitability.
