San Diego Padres Minor League Coach Detained by ICE During Work Trip
Oswaldo Pirela, a minor league catching coordinator for the San Diego Padres, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at El Paso International Airport. Pirela, a former Venezuelan baseball player, was on a work trip for the Padres when he was taken into custody on Sunday morning. Federal records indicate he is being held at a detention center in El Paso. The Padres organization has acknowledged the situation and stated they are working to gather more information. Pirela's family reports that he has lived in the U.S. for 12 years, applied for asylum in 2015, and resides in Peoria, Arizona, with his wife and two U.S.-citizen children. His family asserts he has followed all U.S. laws and has authorization to work, though The Athletic reported he was not carrying his physical work-permit card at the time of detention. The exact reason for his detention has not been publicly disclosed by ICE.
