Wildfire Forces Evacuation of NASA's Deep Space Network Station in Spain, Impacting Global Communications
A wildfire has swept through NASA's Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex, leading to the evacuation of all 90 personnel. The complex, which houses six massive radio antennas, is crucial for maintaining communication with interplanetary spacecraft. The fire has raised concerns about the condition of the antennas, including a 70-meter dish critical for long-range missions. NASA has shifted operations to its Goldstone complex in California, but the loss of the Madrid facility exacerbates an existing capacity crisis within the Deep Space Network. The network, already operating at overcapacity, now faces increased strain as it attempts to redistribute communication loads across its remaining nodes in Goldstone and Canberra.
