Texas Senate Bill 37 and Federal Funding Align to Boost Workforce Training in South Texas
A new alignment between Texas state policy and federal funding is set to significantly enhance workforce training opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley. Texas Senate Bill 37, in conjunction with the federal Workforce Pell program, aims to expand access to short-term, job-focused education. This initiative allows public colleges to quickly align academic programs with workforce demands, removing previous barriers to curriculum changes. The Workforce Pell program, effective from July 1, 2026, will provide financial aid for short-term, noncredit programs that can be completed in as little as eight weeks. Local institutions like South Texas College and Texas Southmost College are expected to play pivotal roles by developing programs in collaboration with employers in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and energy.
