NTSB Reports United Airlines Flight Struck Pole During Newark Landing
A United Airlines Boeing 767, arriving from Venice, Italy, struck a light pole while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3, 2026. According to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the aircraft was flying just 19 feet above the New Jersey Turnpike when the incident occurred. The plane was below the normal glide path for the final three-quarters of a mile before landing. The collision resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage and slashes on one of the plane's tires. Despite the impact, the pilots and air traffic control were unaware of the collision at the time. The NTSB is continuing its investigation, with a final report expected within a year.
