China's WAICO Initiative Raises Questions on AI Diplomacy and Global Standards
China has launched the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), a multilateral initiative aimed at fostering global collaboration in AI development. The organization, headquartered in Shanghai, was established with the participation of 29 nations and aims to address the AI divide and prevent new historical injustices. However, there are concerns that WAICO may primarily serve China's interests, similar to other multilateral organizations like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The initiative is seen as a strategic move by China to influence global AI standards and expand its technological influence, especially as it faces restrictions on accessing U.S. technology.
