Germany Advocates for Enhanced European Defense Following U.S. Troop Reduction
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has called for a stronger European defense posture in response to the U.S. decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. The Pentagon's announcement has prompted Germany to accelerate its military expansion, aiming to increase the number of active-duty Bundeswehr soldiers from 185,000 to 260,000. Pistorius emphasized the need for Europe to take on more responsibility for its own security, citing a perceived growing threat from Russia. Despite tight budgets and capability gaps, NATO members have pledged to enhance their defense capabilities, though it may take years to meet regional security needs.
