U.S. Cities Challenge Texas Court Ruling on Biden-Era Immigration Rule
A coalition of U.S. cities, including Baltimore, Columbus, and New Haven, along with the legal services provider Centro Legal De La Raza, is seeking to appeal a Texas federal judge's decision to vacate a Biden-era immigration rule. The rule in question allowed immigration judges to close removal proceedings under specific circumstances, such as when a noncitizen obtains U.S. citizenship or is not mentally competent. The cities argue that the ruling, issued by Chief Judge Reed O’Connor, results from a 'collusive agreement' between President Trump's Justice Department and the Texas attorney general's office. The vacatur of the rule could lead to increased deportations, affecting tax revenues and community safety in these cities.
