Former Governor Jay Inslee Endorses Washington State's Millionaires Tax Amid Legal Challenges
Former Washington Governor Jay Inslee has endorsed the state's 'millionaires tax,' a measure that imposes a 9.9% tax on incomes over $1 million. This tax, which passed earlier this year, is designed to generate approximately $3 billion annually, with funds allocated to education, tax breaks for low-income families, and sales tax reductions on hygiene products and diapers. Despite its passage, the tax faces a ballot recall in November and a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality. Inslee, who served as governor from 2013 to 2025, supports the tax as a means to address the state's regressive tax code. However, former governors Christine Gregoire and Gary Locke have expressed skepticism, questioning the state's fiscal management and the potential expansion of the tax to lower income levels.
