Germany Investigates Russia's Alleged Involvement in Signal Phishing Attacks on Officials
The German government is investigating a series of phishing attacks on Signal, a secure messaging app, which targeted high-ranking politicians, military personnel, and journalists. The attacks, suspected to be linked to Russia, involved a fake Signal security chatbot that tricked users into linking their accounts to external devices controlled by hackers. This allowed the attackers to access past chats, ongoing conversations, and other stored data. The investigation, which began in mid-February 2026, is being conducted by federal prosecutors and involves suspicions of espionage. Although the German government has not officially attributed the attacks to Russia, the country's domestic intelligence service and cybersecurity authority had previously warned about such phishing campaigns likely being state-controlled.
