Arizona Monsoon Season: What to Expect in 2026
Arizona's monsoon season, officially defined by the National Weather Service as running from June 15 to September 30, is a critical period for the state, bringing much-needed rainfall and occasional dust storms, known as haboobs. This year, meteorologists are forecasting a potentially wetter-than-average season due to a 'super' El Niño weather pattern. Historically, monsoon season accounts for roughly half of the annual rainfall in the Phoenix area, with southern Arizona receiving even more. The season is marked by thunderstorms, heavy rain, and the iconic scent of creosote plants after rainfall. While the rain provides relief from the summer heat and supports vegetation growth, it can also lead to flash flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
