French Lawmakers Push for Under-15 Social Media Ban Amid EU Compliance Concerns
French lawmakers have reached a compromise on a bill that aims to ban social media use for children under 15, potentially coming into effect by the new school year in September. The bill, strongly supported by French President Emmanuel Macron, also includes a ban on mobile phone use in high schools. The legislation faced challenges from the European Commission, which found it not fully compatible with EU law. After negotiations, lawmakers agreed on a blanket ban, leaving EU authorities to ensure compliance with age restrictions. The bill is designed to align with the EU Digital Services Act, which aims to protect internet users. The legislation excludes online encyclopedias and educational platforms. If passed, the law will take effect after August 10, following the EU's notification period.
