Researchers Map Influenza A Virus's Rewiring of Human Host Cells, Revealing New Drug Targets
Researchers at EMBL Hamburg, in collaboration with the Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology, have achieved a breakthrough in understanding how the influenza A virus manipulates human host cells. Using a specialized version of cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS), the team mapped protein interactions within intact infected cells, providing unprecedented detail on how the virus hijacks cellular machinery. This study, published in Nature Microbiology, highlights two key mechanisms: the movement of haemagglutinin through the cell's transport system and the dissolution of paraspeckles, which releases RNA-binding proteins for viral replication. This research offers a new perspective on virus-host interactions, potentially guiding the development of more effective flu therapies.
