Access to Doula Care for Medicaid Recipients Remains Limited Despite State Coverage
In Virginia, while Medicaid now covers doula services, access remains limited due to administrative and logistical challenges. Taja Iglesias, founder of The Momager Co. in Alexandria, Virginia, highlights the difficulties faced by doulas in getting certified and reimbursed through Medicaid. Despite the potential benefits of doula care, such as improved maternal health outcomes, the cumbersome certification process and low reimbursement rates deter many doulas from participating in the program. As a result, only a small percentage of Medicaid births in Virginia utilize doula services, leaving many expectant parents without the support they need.
