Stonewall Inn Co-Owners Take on Debt to Preserve LGBTQ+ Legacy and Future
Stacy Lentz, co-owner of the Stonewall Inn, shares her journey of purchasing the historic site with her partners to preserve its legacy and impact the future of the LGBTQ+ community. Lentz, who grew up in Kansas, moved to New York City and became a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In 2006, she and her partners bought the Stonewall Inn, a site of significant historical importance for the LGBTQ+ rights movement, to prevent its closure. Despite financial challenges, including taking on credit card debt and managing high operational costs, Lentz and her partners are committed to maintaining the Inn as a symbol of LGBTQ+ history and activism. They have also established the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, a nonprofit aimed at supporting LGBTQ+ individuals in challenging environments and providing safe-space training.
