Taiwan's 'The Heaven Sword' Tree Crowned Tallest in East Asia, Highlighting Conservation Efforts
A team of researchers and citizen scientists in Taiwan has identified 'The Heaven Sword,' an 84.1-meter-tall Taiwania fir, as the tallest tree in East Asia. This discovery is the result of a nearly decade-long search by the 'Taiwan tree seekers,' a group comprising professional tree climbers, ecologists, geologists, and remote sensing specialists. The team utilized LiDAR technology to map and measure the island's dense forests, which are among the most carbon-dense environments globally. The project, which began in 2014, has documented over 941 trees exceeding 65 meters in height, underscoring Taiwan's rich biodiversity and the importance of preserving its old-growth forests.
