Los Angeles County Public Schools Face Significant Enrollment Decline Impacting Resources
Public schools in Los Angeles County are experiencing a notable decline in student enrollment, with a decrease of 32,953 students, or 2.6%, for the 2025-26 academic year. This decline is part of a broader trend across California, where enrollment dropped by 1.3% statewide. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) alone saw a reduction of 16,765 students, representing a 4.5% decrease. This trend is attributed to various factors, including declining birth rates, high housing costs, reduced immigration, and federal deportation efforts. Despite these challenges, LAUSD and other districts have so far resisted closing schools or cutting staff, which are common responses to declining enrollment.
