UNHCR Reports Doubled Displacement Crisis in Central Sahel Amid Instability and Funding Shortfalls
The United Nations has issued an alert regarding a severe displacement crisis in the central Sahel region, encompassing Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Nearly four million people have been forced to leave their homes, a figure that has more than doubled in the past six years. This increase precedes a series of coups in the region, which has been plagued by instability and violence. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) indicates that the crisis is exacerbated by ongoing attacks against civilians, climate-related shocks, and significant shortfalls in humanitarian funding. The number of refugees in the affected areas is now almost equivalent to the local host community population, placing immense strain on already limited resources such as land and water, and overwhelming health services. In 2020, the region recorded over 1.7 million internally displaced people and 365,000 refugees, highlighting the rapid escalation of the situation.
