UNESCO Adds 25 New World Heritage Sites, Including Normandy D-Day Beaches
UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has announced the addition of 25 new sites to its World Heritage list during its 48th session in Busan, South Korea. Among these newly designated sites are the Normandy D-Day Beaches in France and Mount Olympus in Greece. The Normandy D-Day Beaches, recognized for their exceptional cultural landscape, mark the site of the Allied landings during World War II. This designation honors the historical significance of the beaches where 156,115 Allied troops landed or were airdropped in 1944. The site includes remnants of the Atlantic Wall and the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. Mount Olympus, known for its mythological significance and diverse flora, has been designated as a mixed World Heritage Site, highlighting its cultural and natural importance.
