UN World Conference Against Racism in Durban Criticized for Antisemitic Incidents and Focus on Israel
The 2001 UN World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in Durban, South Africa, is being remembered for its significant antisemitic incidents and its hijacking by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to exclusively target Israel. According to the New York Post, the conference saw 20,000 protesters chanting antisemitic slogans and displaying banners like 'Hitler was Right.' Inside the conference, delegates distributed antisemitic literature, including 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,' and posters featuring Hitler. The OIC, which includes authoritarian states, had previously held a pre-planning conference in Tehran where Israeli officials and Jewish groups were barred. At this pre-conference, a UN declaration was drafted that named only Israel as a racist human-rights violator.
