Puerto Rico Government Approves $2 Billion Luxury Development Amid Environmental Concerns
The government of Puerto Rico has authorized a $2 billion luxury development project in the southwest region of the island, specifically in the coastal town of Cabo Rojo. The project, named Esencia, is set to include 500 luxury hotel rooms, 1,200 private residences, two golf courses, an equestrian center, a school, and a medical center. The developers, Reuben Brothers and Three Rules Capital, claim that over 75% of the project will focus on conservation and green space, including the restoration of wetlands and coastal ecosystems. Despite these assurances, environmentalists and local activists have expressed strong opposition, citing potential strains on resources and threats to wildlife. The Defend Cabo Rojo Coalition and other groups argue that the project was approved without adequate public consultation, which they see as a violation of due process.
