AGROSAVIA Enhances Crop Diversity Efforts in Colombia with New Funding Initiative
AGROSAVIA, Colombia's agricultural research organization, is intensifying its efforts to preserve crop diversity through the Power of Diversity Funding Facility, a multi-donor initiative. This initiative aims to conserve, cultivate, and promote underutilized crops, known as opportunity crops, to enhance food system resilience. AGROSAVIA's genebank, established in 1994, currently safeguards over 34,000 crop samples crucial to Colombian agriculture. The organization is focusing on two opportunity crops: peach palm and chayote. These crops were selected after consultations with farmers, scientists, and stakeholders, reflecting Colombia's cultural and ecological richness. AGROSAVIA is also analyzing the value chains and food environments of these crops to better understand their journey from farms to consumers.
