Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Warns of Significant Increase in Firearms Stolen from Vehicles
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has issued a public warning regarding a notable increase in firearms being stolen from vehicles across the city. So far this year, 388 firearms have been reported stolen from vehicles, marking an increase of 58 guns compared to the same period last year. The problem has become particularly acute in recent weeks, with 38 firearms reported stolen from vehicles within the past 21 days alone. JSO Public Information Officer Max Morel highlighted that many of these incidents involve unlocked vehicles where owners have left their firearms. Morel emphasized the importance of not leaving firearms unattended in vehicles, as they become easy targets for thieves. The JSO advises gun owners to take their firearms with them when leaving their vehicles or to secure them properly inside. They also recommend keeping detailed records of firearm information, including serial numbers and purchase documents, to aid in recovery efforts if a gun is stolen.
