Fiji Parliamentary Committee Recommends Comprehensive Review of Fiji Sugar Corporation Workforce
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence in Fiji has recommended that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) undertake a comprehensive review of its workforce. This recommendation emerged from the committee's review of the Ministry of Sugar’s 2020-2021 Annual Report. Committee chairperson Lenora Qereqeretabua highlighted the necessity of examining workforce development, remuneration, apprenticeship programs, and employee welfare within the FSC. The committee also suggested establishing minimum welfare standards for cane lorry drivers, including provisions for sanitation, drinking water, shelter, seating, and improved communication during mill breakdowns. Ms. Qereqeretabua emphasized that the challenges facing the sugar industry are interconnected, linking declining cane production to issues such as farmer numbers, land tenure, labor, mechanization, research, transportation, mill efficiency, climate resilience, and the financial viability of cane farming.
