Future Flood Risks to Intensify Along U.S. Coasts Due to Climate Change
A recent analysis by Yale Climate Connections highlights the growing threat of compound flood events along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts. These events, caused by a combination of storm surge and excessive rainfall, are expected to become more frequent and severe due to climate change. Factors such as rising sea levels, increased hurricane intensity, and heavier rainfall are driving this trend. For instance, a potential sea level rise of 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) and a 50% increase in rainfall by 2100 could expand the compound flooding area to 46%, impacting 23 times more structures compared to 2017. Historical data from Hurricane Harvey in 2017 serves as a stark example, where 60.58 inches (1,534 mm) of rain caused catastrophic flooding in Texas. The study warns that traditional risk assessments often underestimate these compound events, leaving coastal areas increasingly vulnerable.
