UC San Francisco Researchers Map Protein Interactions Linked to Profound Autism, Offering New Treatment Avenues
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have created a comprehensive map of over a thousand protein interactions associated with specific autism risk genes. This molecular atlas, published in the journal Science, aims to bridge the gap between genetic discoveries and the development of effective treatments for profound autism. The study involved identifying proteins derived from high-risk autism genes, injecting them into lab-grown cells, and then analyzing their interactions. Utilizing advanced technology, including an AI system called AlphaFold, the researchers were able to determine which proteins directly interact.
