Environmental Groups Challenge FCC's Approval of Space-Based Sunlight Project
Four environmental organizations have petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reverse its approval of Reflect Orbital's plan to beam sunlight from space to Earth. The groups, including DarkSky International and the American Bird Conservancy, argue that the project could harm wildlife, disrupt astronomy research, and pose eye safety risks. Reflect Orbital's Earendil-1 satellite aims to reflect sunlight onto specific areas during darkness, but environmentalists warn of potential ecological impacts. The FCC's approval of a test mission could lead to a larger satellite constellation, raising concerns about unregulated space activities. Critics emphasize the need for thorough environmental reviews before such projects proceed.
