Nigerian Government to Launch New Alphanumeric Postcode System in October
The Nigerian Federal Government is set to unveil a new Alphanumeric Postcode System on October 1, 2026. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, aims to replace the country's current outdated numeric-only system. The new system will assign a unique postcode to every home, designed for precision and a digital future. An alphanumeric postcode system utilizes a combination of letters and numbers, along with spaces or punctuation, to identify specific geographic locations, streets, or individual buildings for mail delivery. This approach offers a significantly higher number of unique combinations compared to purely numeric systems, allowing for more precise location pinpointing, potentially down to a single side of a street or a specific large building.
