Maine Air National Guard Base Named Finalist for KC-46A Air Refueling Squadron

The Bangor Air National Guard base in Maine has been selected as one of four finalists by the Air Force to potentially house a new KC-46A air refueling squadron. This announcement was made by Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Angus King (I-Maine). The Bangor base was chosen from an initial pool of 14 Air National Guard bases. The KC-46A Pegasus is a more advanced aircraft compared to the aging KC-135 Stratotankers currently assigned to the 101st Air Refueling Wing at Bangor. If selected, the first KC-46A aircraft are expected to arrive in 2030. The other finalist bases are Forbes Field Air National Guard Base in Topeka, Kansas; Key Field Air National Guard Base in Meridian, Mississippi; and McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base in Alcoa, Tennessee. The selection process will now involve further site analysis and evaluation of these four finalists.

The letter advocates for continued funding for the U.S. Army's Bell MV-75 Cheyenne II tiltrotor program. The MV-75 is intended to replace a significant portion of the Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk fleet. Lawmakers emphasized the MV-75's importance as the Pentagon's sole active vertical lift development program and a top modernization priority, crucial for maintaining decisive overmatch in contested environments. The call for support comes amidst recent funding uncertainties that have impacted the program's schedule, with Textron CEO Lisa Atherton indicating the company would self-fund some activities to keep it on track while awaiting reprogrammed funds.
