Rare Earth Elements Show Promise in Enhancing Green Hydrogen Production Technologies
Research is actively exploring the circular utilization of rare earth elements (REEs) to improve green hydrogen production technologies. REEs are being investigated for their potential to enhance reaction kinetics, boost catalytic activity, and increase overall efficiency in high-temperature reactions crucial for hydrogen generation. Various synthesis methods, including impregnation, co-precipitation, sol-gel, and hydrothermal synthesis, are being employed to create rare earth-based catalysts. These methods allow for precise control over catalyst characteristics, such as surface area, active species dispersion, and structural stability. For instance, studies have shown that doping catalysts with rare earth elements like lanthanum, europium, erbium, and gadolinium can inhibit electron-hole recombination and improve photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution.
