Regional District Opposes Okanagan Falls Gravel Quarry Over Environmental Concerns
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen (RDOS) has expressed opposition to a proposed gravel pit quarry southeast of Okanagan Falls due to environmental concerns. The Allendale Quarry, initially presented for public feedback in 2024, is planned to be located approximately 800 meters south of the junction of Irrigation Creek Road and Shuttleworth Creek Road. The RDOS board recently voted against supporting the project, citing its proximity to the Vaseaux – Big Horn National Wildlife Area, which is home to 30 federally listed species at risk. Additionally, the lack of a water source on site for dust mitigation was a significant concern. Despite the unanimous vote against the project, there is skepticism about the Ministry of Mining's adherence to local government recommendations, as past experiences have shown a lack of cooperation.
