Illinois State Museum Launches Route 66 Exhibit Highlighting Historical Significance
The Illinois State Museum is set to open a new exhibition titled 'Miles of Memories: Stories of Route 66' on May 23. This exhibit focuses on the history and cultural impact of U.S. Route 66, a highway that once served as a major route between Chicago and Los Angeles. The exhibition will feature personal stories and historical artifacts, including vintage souvenirs, neon signs, and classic Burma-Shave signs. A key component of the exhibit is the Route 66 Oral History Project, which includes 100 recorded interviews with individuals who experienced the highway during its peak years. Visitors will have the opportunity to listen to excerpts from these interviews, providing a personal connection to the history of Route 66.
