Bipartisan Bill Seeks to Reverse Trump Administration's Endangered Species Act Changes
A bipartisan bill, the Safeguarding Endangered Species Act, has been introduced by Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick and Mike Quigley to counteract recent changes made by the Trump administration to the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The new rule, issued by the Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA Fisheries, redefines 'harm' under the ESA, excluding habitat destruction from its prohibitions. This reinterpretation marks a significant shift from how the law has been applied for the past fifty years. The proposed legislation aims to nullify this rule, maintaining that habitat destruction that harms protected wildlife should continue to be considered a violation of the ESA.
