Indian Government Strengthens Legal Framework Against AI-Generated Deepfakes
The Indian government has enacted laws and rules to address the challenges posed by AI-generated deepfakes, aiming to ensure a safe and accountable cyberspace. The Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, include provisions to combat identity theft, impersonation, privacy violations, and the spread of misinformation. The IT Rules, 2021, mandate intermediaries to observe due diligence and prevent the hosting of unlawful content, including deepfakes. Significant Social Media Intermediaries (SSMIs) are required to deploy automated tools to detect and limit the spread of harmful content. The government has issued multiple advisories to intermediaries, emphasizing compliance with statutory obligations and the responsible handling of sensitive information.
