Libya's Largest Oil Refinery Halts Operations Amid Violent Clashes
Libya, Africa's second-largest oil producer, has suspended operations at its largest oil refinery, Zawiya, following violent clashes near the facility. The shutdown occurred on May 8, 2026, after military projectiles struck parts of the complex, prompting emergency safety measures. The Zawiya refinery, which processes over 120,000 barrels of crude oil daily, is operated by Azzawiya Oil Refining Company, a subsidiary of the National Oil Corporation (NOC). Despite the attack, the facility reportedly did not suffer significant damage, and all tankers were safely evacuated. The unrest reflects Libya's ongoing instability since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, with the country remaining divided among rival factions vying for control over its oil infrastructure.
