Nauru Withdraws Recognition of Georgia's Occupied Regions, Impacting Diplomatic Landscape
The government of Nauru, now known as the Republic of Naoero, has announced the withdrawal of its recognition of Georgia's Russia-occupied regions, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia, as independent states. This decision, effective immediately, also includes the termination of diplomatic relations with these regions. Nauru's move leaves only four countries—Russia, Syria, Venezuela, and Nicaragua—continuing to recognize these regions as independent. The decision follows similar actions by Vanuatu and Tuvalu, which withdrew recognition in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Georgia has welcomed Nauru's decision and expressed readiness to establish diplomatic ties.
